Sabudana Khichadi
Updated: Nov 8, 2024
Whenever there is any Hindu festival like Ganesh Chaturthi, Ekadashi, Mahashivratri or Navratri, many folks from Western ghats and some other states of India fast and make Sabudana khichadi as their staple diet for that day. It is a very famous dish eaten in Maharashtrian households even when there is no fasting.
My recipe is simple and a favorite with all age groups. It is made from starch which is shaped like white pearls which is popular in India and few other countries. Its full of carbohydrates. Its filling and an energy booster when you eat this during a fast :)
Cooking time- 15 minutes. Serves - 4
Ingredients:-
- 2 cups Sabudana (sago pearls)
- ½ cup roasted peanuts (coarsely ground in a mixer)
- 6 green chilies (4 if you like mild)
- 1 boiled potato (optional)
- 2 tablespoon oil
- 2 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)
- 1 teaspoon Jeera (cumin seeds)
- 1 teaspoon salt (or add according to taste)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ½ lemon juice
- 1/4 th cup- chopped coriander/cilantro leaves.
- 2 tablespoon- grated coconut to garnish (frozen or fresh)
Method:-
1. Wash sabudana 3 times and rinse out all the water.
2. Soak with very little water overnight or for 4-5 hours.
3. For 2 cups add 4 cups of water while soaking
4. It will look like big pearls. With a fork separate all
5. Add salt, sugar, peanut powder to sabudana and mix well.
6. In a saucepan(kadai) heat oil on medium heat and add Jeera
7. Add green chilies.
8. Add cubed potatoes and stir fry for 3-4 minutes.
9. Now add the sabudana and ghee and stir for 3-4 minutes with lemon juice.
10. Cook for 4-5 minutes till all looks transparent and semi soft.
11. Garnish with coconut and coriander leaves.
Note- This is a favorite dish to serve with yogurt on the side or with a cup of tea. You can also add extra roasted peanuts while serving...
